The D&GV is small railroad, only 20 miles from the much more extensive Cass Scenic Railroad, but it features a rare treat – one of only three operating Climax geared logging locomotives left in the world. This 55-ton workhorse was built in 1910 for the Moore-Keppel Lumber Co., which used it for many decades in a nearby county. Unlike the perfectly restored Shay locos at Cass, this old Climax looks its age, as if it’s been working out in the weather for a long time.
(Unfortunately, I visited on an overcast afternoon, so my photos of this railroad aren’t as vivid as I’d like them to be.)
